Biggest construction projects in Dubai to watch in 2026

According to the Dubai Urban Plan 2040, the city is focused on doubling its green and recreational areas to accommodate a growing population.

1- Al Maktoum International Airport expansion and Dubai South

To understand the scale of this project, it helps to start with the numbers. Once completed, Al Maktoum International Airport is expected to handle up to 260 million passengers annually and 12 million tonnes of cargo, making it the largest airport globally by capacity.

Before getting into machines and construction phases, it is important to understand the geography. The airport sits at the heart of Dubai South, a master-planned district covering approximately 145 square kilometres. This is not just an airport expansion, but a full urban ecosystem built around aviation, logistics, manufacturing, and residential communities.

2- Dubai Metro Blue Line

After aviation, mobility becomes the next major pillar. The Dubai Metro Blue Line adds approximately 30 kilometres of new track and 14 stations, connecting emerging districts such as Dubai Creek Harbour, Academic City, and International City to the existing network.

Before the first train runs, years of underground and elevated construction are required. This phase is where underground work and precision engineering meet.

3- Etihad Rail

While metro lines reshape urban mobility, Etihad Rail connects Dubai to the rest of the UAE and beyond. Spanning around 1,200 kilometres, the network links ports, industrial zones, and logistics hubs, with freight services already operational and passenger services planned.

Rail projects introduce a different construction rhythm. Long corridors, repetitive structures, and high material volumes dominate the workflow.
